Number overview
0800-500-9856 is a toll-free number (the 0800 prefix). Directories carry many user reports describing calls from this number claiming to be from the police, such as Aichi Prefectural Police (as of 2026-08-03). Telnavi lists over 400 reviews, and Yahoo! Chiebukuro has consultations suspecting special fraud. This site previously described the number as fiber-line sales; after re-verification, the confirmed reports concern police-impersonation calls, so we corrected the description.
Reported behavior
- Claims to be the police (such as Aichi Prefectural Police) and brings up bank cards or accounts
- Some reports also describe calls posing as a power company
Japanese police repeatedly warn about special fraud in which criminals pose as police officers to steal cash or bank cards. Real police never ask for account numbers, PINs, or asset details over the phone, nor do they collect bank cards.
How to handle this call
If a caller claiming to be the police mentions money or bank cards, hang up and call back the officially published number of your local police station or the consultation line (#9110) yourself. Never use a number the caller gives you.
