Where to Report Scam SMS
If you receive a scam SMS, you can report it or seek help through the following channels in Japan.
Council of Anti-Phishing Japan
Accepts reports of phishing SMS and emails. Reported URLs are used for public alerts and countermeasures.
Police Consultation Hotline #9110
For non-emergency scam consultations. Call 110 for emergencies such as ongoing fraud or immediately after losing money. File a formal damage report at your nearest police station.
Consumer Hotline 188
For contract and payment troubles. Connects you to your nearest consumer affairs center (open on weekends and holidays).
Run by the Japan Data Communications Association; accepts reports about spam email and SMS.

Carriers such as docomo, au, and SoftBank provide spam SMS reporting and blocking features.

How can I tell if an SMS is a scam (smishing)?
Sender numbers and names can be spoofed, so the sender display alone proves nothing. Key checks are whether URLs in the message use official domains, and whether the text uses urgency tactics, asks you to reply with verification codes, or uses URL shorteners. When in doubt, do not open links in the SMS — verify through the official app or a bookmarked official website.
What should I do if I already opened a URL from an SMS?
Opening a page does not necessarily cause immediate harm. Never enter IDs, passwords, or credit card numbers on the page. If you already did, change the password for that service and contact your card company or bank immediately, and consult the police hotline #9110 if needed.
Where should I report a scam SMS?
Phishing SMS can be reported to the Council of Anti-Phishing Japan. If you suffered damage, call the police consultation hotline #9110 (or 110 in an emergency). For contract or payment troubles, call the Consumer Hotline 188. You can also use the Spam Mail Consultation Center and your carrier's reporting features.
Can the sender's phone number be spoofed?
Yes. Caller ID spoofing lets scammers fake the numbers and display names of real companies, and scam messages can even appear in the same thread as genuine ones. Never trust a message just because of the displayed number — judge by its URLs and what it asks you to do.
