Telework

Telework (remote work) uses ICT to work outside the office - from home, cafes, or coworking spaces. It spread rapidly in Japan after the 2020 COVID pandemic, with corporate adoption reaching about 50% by 2023 according to Ministry surveys.

Phone infrastructure is a key telework challenge. Traditional office PBX only worked on-premises, but cloud PBX enables smartphones as extensions. Workers can make and receive calls using the company number from home, with normal extension transfers.

Video calls are telework's core tool. Zoom, Teams, and Meet are used for meetings, sales calls, interviews, and training. Quality requires stable Wi-Fi and sufficient bandwidth. Noise-canceling headsets are recommended.

Telework security measures include VPN usage, avoiding public Wi-Fi, screen locking, and preventing call content leakage (private room calls). See VoIP basics and business phone guide for details.
