Garaho

Garaho combines a feature phone's appearance and controls with Android OS internals. The portmanteau of "garakei" and "sumaho" is officially "Android-equipped feature phone." Representative models include au's GRATINA series and Docomo's AQUOS Keitai.

The key advantage is physical keypad operation. For elderly users unfamiliar with touchscreens and workers needing gloved operation, physical buttons provide reliable tactile feedback. Flip designs protect screens while maintaining portability.

Android OS enables basic apps like LINE and email. However, small screens and non-touch optimization limit usable apps. Primary uses are calls, SMS, LINE messaging, and simple web browsing.

As 3G networks shut down (au: 2022, SoftBank: 2024, Docomo: 2026 planned), garaho demand grows as a transition path for legacy feature phone users. For elderly users finding smartphones intimidating, garaho offers familiar form factors on 4G/5G networks. See telephone evolution for context.
