What's Happening With Phone-SNS Linkage
Most SNS require phone-number verification at signup. While useful for identity confirmation, the number is then used for account search and auto-friending, leading to cases where acquaintances or stalkers locate you. According to MIC's communications usage survey, around 70% of SNS users register with their phone number, but the awareness of risks lags behind. SNS security books are useful starting points.
Risks by Major Platform
LINE
LINE requires phone verification, and by default both "find users by phone number" and "auto-friend by contacts" are on. Anyone with your number in their contacts auto-adds you as a friend, leading to renewed contact from former associates - reports include reconciliation pressure and stalking.
Instagram generates "people you may know" recommendations from phone numbers. Anonymous side accounts get linked to real-name accounts and become discoverable.
X (Twitter)
X has a setting that lets others find your account by phone number. Cases exist where anonymous accounts have been tied back to identity through this. As covered in SNS-linked phone scams, scammers use SNS to map numbers to identities.
How Number-to-Account Identification Works
SNS store hashed numbers on their servers and match them against contact lists. Anyone with your number triggers your account to be suggested - including former colleagues or ex-partners you've cut off, structurally exposing you again.
Settings That Minimize Linkage
LINE
- Settings > Friends > Auto-add: OFF
- Allow others to add me: OFF
- Find users by phone number: OFF
- Allow ID search: OFF
- Settings > Account > Personal info > delete phone number
- Delete synced contacts
- Switch to private account
X (Twitter)
- Settings > Privacy and safety > Discoverability: turn off "find me by phone number"
- Delete uploaded contacts
Tips for Side-Account Operation
To run accounts decoupled from your real name, register with a separate virtual phone number or 050 IP phone number. Combined with smartphone privacy settings, this creates strong separation.
What to Do If You're Already Linked
To break existing links:
- Delete the phone number in SNS settings (propagation can take time)
- Server-side caches take 2-4 weeks to clear - be patient
- Block specific accounts you don't want to be visible to
- If needed, delete the account entirely and re-register with a different number
