Unknown Calls Are Nothing to Fear
When you get your first smartphone, calls from unknown numbers can feel scary. But with a few simple rules, you can handle them confidently. Unknown calls are usually wrong numbers, sales calls, or scams - and occasionally legitimate calls from hospitals or schools.
Basic Rule: It's OK Not to Answer
You don't have to answer calls from unknown numbers. If it's important, the caller will leave a voicemail, call back, or send a text message. A single call with no message is almost always a sales call or wrong number.
Search the Number
Copy the number from your call history and search it online. You'll often find the company name or user reviews. If reviews mention "scam" or "nuisance," don't call back.
If You Answer
Don't give your name - just say "hello." Never share personal information like your name, address, or school. If anything sounds suspicious, hang up immediately. It's not rude - your safety comes first.
Before Calling Back
Search the number first. Never call back numbers starting with 0570 (expensive toll numbers), 0990 (premium rate), or international numbers (starting with +).
Ask a Trusted Adult
When in doubt, tell a parent or trusted adult about the call. Always report calls that mention money, ask for personal information, or make you feel scared.
