A virtual phone number (virtual number) is a phone number managed in the cloud rather than tied to a physical telephone line. Calls arrive over the internet and can be forwarded to whichever device you configure, such as a smartphone, a PC, or a landline. Because it is built on VoIP technology, it works regardless of where you are.
Business uses are varied. Companies acquire virtual numbers with local area codes to present a regional presence, assign a different number to each advertising channel to measure response rates (call tracking), and add temporary reception numbers only for busy seasons. Adding or removing a number is handled entirely online, so there is no wait for physical line work.
Individuals use virtual numbers to keep their real number private (phone number privacy). Note, however, that a virtual number is a way to separate the number you show others, not a way to become anonymous. One caution: a virtual number may not support emergency calls (110 and 119). Rather than routing everything through this single number, it is safer to keep its use limited to specific purposes.
