Toll-Free Number

A toll-free number is a general term for phone numbers where the receiving party (typically a business) pays the call charges instead of the caller. In Japan, Free Dial (0120) and Free Access (0800) are representative examples, known internationally as Toll-Free Numbers. Since customers can inquire without worrying about call charges, they are widely used for customer support and order processing.

The difference between 0120 and 0800 lies mainly in the provider and digit count. 0120 is the Free Dial brand provided by NTT Communications, with 10-digit numbers (0120-XXX-XXX). 0800 is the Free Access service provided by multiple carriers including KDDI and SoftBank, with 11-digit numbers (0800-XXX-XXXX). Due to its longer history, 0120 has higher consumer recognition and is preferred for consumer-facing services. However, 0120 numbers are becoming scarce, making new acquisitions difficult, so 0800 usage is increasing.

A commonly confused number is Navi Dial (0570). Navi Dial is not a toll-free number - the caller pays the charges. Moreover, it is excluded from mobile unlimited calling plans, making it effectively expensive for callers. The distinction "0120 = free" and "0570 = paid" is essential consumer knowledge.

The cost structure for businesses adopting toll-free numbers consists of a monthly base fee (several thousand to tens of thousands of yen) plus per-call charges (approximately 8-10 yen per 3 minutes). For businesses with high inquiry volumes, call charges can reach hundreds of thousands of yen monthly, but considering improved customer satisfaction and increased sales from more inquiries, the return on investment is considered high. Combining with a vanity number can further boost advertising response rates through the synergy of memorability and free calling.
