Call charges are fees incurred when making phone calls. In Japan, the caller pays by default. The only exceptions are toll-free numbers (charged to the business) and collect calls.
Landline rates depend on distance and duration. Local calls cost about 9.35 yen per 3 minutes, but long-distance calls can exceed 80 yen per 3 minutes.
Mobile call rates were traditionally 22 yen per 30 seconds, but carriers now offer flat-rate options like "5-minute unlimited" and "fully unlimited." Budget SIMs may offer half-price calls through dedicated apps.
IP phones and Hikari Denwa charge flat nationwide rates regardless of distance. App-based calls (LINE, FaceTime) are free but consume data.
Navi Dial (0570) numbers are excluded from unlimited calling plans and charge separately. Always check for a toll-free alternative before calling.
