050 numbers are assigned to IP phone services. They consist of 050 plus eight digits (e.g., 050-XXXX-XXXX) and, unlike area codes, are not tied to a geographic region. They work anywhere there is an internet connection and need no line installation work, so they are used as side-job numbers for individuals and as contact lines for businesses. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications listing of assigned numbers shows roughly 24 million 050 numbers allocated to carriers as of June 2026 (which is separate from how many are actually in use).
The biggest limitation is that 050 numbers generally cannot reach emergency services (110 and 119). Because the number is not tied to a physical location, the police or fire service receiving the call cannot establish where the caller is. If a 050 number is your main phone, keep a mobile or landline available for emergencies.
050 numbers are also a source of nuisance calls. Because they take little effort to set up, they get abused as numbers that are hard to trace back, so when an unfamiliar 050 number calls, it is worth checking who it belongs to before calling back.
On the outgoing side, note that calls from a 050 number to 0120 or 0800 toll-free numbers may not connect. When that happens, use the number starting with 03, 06 and so on listed on the company's website.
